Summerslam 2009 Build Up:

Im not preachy,
I just tell the truth

CM Punk addresses his
critics

Rey Mysterio Vs Dolph Ziggler for the IC Title - 9.0

Stunning match that has to be a candidate for greatest Summerslam opener. From start to finish the match had a great pace and brilliant action with some excellent high risk spots. Not everything was as smooth as it could have been and there was almost a few botches, however this only seemed to add to the realism, a rare quality in a match. Towards the end of the match Ziggler was having his name chanted despite portraying an extremely unlikable character, the crowd realising they were witnessing a high quality performance. Mysterio retains the title after a top rope hurricanrana.

MVP Vs Jack Swagger - 7.6

The match was set up nicely with an interview with both just before they stepped through the curtain. The match itself lacked something spectacular but was still more than watchable with MVP picking up the win with his signature move, The Playmaker.

Chris Jericho and Big Show Vs Cryme Tyme for the Unified Tag Team Titles - 7.8

A good tag team title match in which the definite underdogs managed to look competitive, although only once coming close to capturing the gold. The champions controlled much of the match and put down the challengers with the WMD.

Kane Vs Great Khali - 6.4

A spectacle on paper but a let down in reality. Kane tried his hardest but Khali's poor selling and immobility led to what can only be described as a poor showing. Kane picks up the victory in the battle of the big men.

D-GenerationX vs Legacy - 8.5

Greatest tag team entrance ever? Firstly it has to be stated that although they have near unlimited potential, coming into this match Legacy are a million leagues away from being credible opponents for HBK and HHH, however they more than hold their own and do look competitive in the match, this being a testament to their own ability and DX's willingness to promote younger talent. The first half of the match lacked pace but built up the second half, which was extremely good. HBK hits sweet chin music for the pin to get the victory in a near 30 minute tag team clinic.

Christian vs William Regal for the ECW Title - 7.5

Not much of a showcase as Christian hit the Kill Switch for the win as Regal was removing his robe. Christian was then demolished by Ezikiel Jackson and Vladamir Kozlov to set up the next chapter of the feud.

Randy Orton Vs John Cena for the WWE Title - 7.8

A decent if not spectacular match between these huge stars that was filled with incident as the match had to be re-started numerous times due to Ortons heelish antics. Although Orton seems out of his depth against Super Cena he picks up a huge win with a surprise RKO after a re-start.

Jeff Hardy Vs CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Title (TLC Match) - 9.1

Unlike the previous WWE title match, this match can only be described as spectacular. It had absolutely everything you could expect from TLC rules, including a phenomenal Swanton Bomb through the announce table. Combine the action produced with the chemistry that these had with each other, plus a dispute that mirrored real life and you have the standout match from the feud of 2009. It should also be noted that despite the fact that Triple H, Shawn Michaels, John Cena and Randy Orton were on the card, it was Jeff Hardy and CM Punk that closed the show.

Summerslam 2009 Event Analysis:

A great event with all title matches being very watchable, and the IC and World Title matches achieving classic status. What let this event down the matches competed without titles on the line, MVP, Jack Swagger, Kane and Great Khali all put in a good amount of effort their showing didn't really stand out from regular televised matches. However the DX / Legacy epic makes up for this events shortcomings. To sum up it could be said that the best parts of this event are what lasted the longest, and the poorer showings were short enough to not detract too much from the quality of the event.
