Wrestlemania 27 Match Reviews:

Edge Vs Alberto Del Rio for the Heavyweight Title 8.1

The Royal Rumble winner title was slightly tarnished by putting this match as the opener, although it was a positive way to open the event. Plenty of good action but a little too short to be the opening classic that it could have been, despite this in the time they had they still whipped the crowd into a frenzy. Edge wins after hitting a spear to retain his title.

Cody Rhodes Vs Rey Mysterio 8.4

This was an extremely entertaining match that was possibly the best wrestling match on the card. The crowd didnt react as much as they should have done because some of the action in this match was brilliant. A real fine effort especially considering there were no titles on the line or any special stipulations / gimmics. Rhodes picks up a huge feather in his cap with Crossroads.

The Corre Vs Big Show, Kane, Santino Marella and Kofi Kingston – 5.5 Unfortunately for those involved this was pure filler and not afforded the time to make anything worth remembering. The Corre lose via squashage.

CM Punk Vs Randy Orton - 7.8

A good if somewhat predictable match by these two ring generals. The build up before the match painted Punk as weak and Orton as almost superhuman, ploughing through Punk’s stable, the New Nexus. The match itself had a good build up, and although there was not any low points there was not really any stand out action. A good match bettered the following month at Extreme Rules 2011.

Jerry Lawler Vs Michael Cole (Steve Austin as special referee) - 7.1

Lawler looked entirely the part as he made his first Wrestlemania entrance as a competitor, the match itself however was a little too long to merit anything better than good, despite the extra personalities that had been injected. A fun match throughout despite the ending which saw Lawlers win overturned and awarded to Cole due to Austins interference.

Triple H Vs Undertaker (No Holds Barred) - 9.2

After the stellar previous two Wrestlemania matches against Shawn Michael it was questionable if this encounter against Triple H could live up to the hype, fortunately for Wrestlemania 27 it was every bit the classic and possibly more! Almost directly after the opening bell the match had a "4th quarter" feel to it with signature / finishing moves being hit or attempted on a regular basis. Drama personified. Undertaker picks up the hardest earned victory of The Streak so far with the Hells Gate submission hold.

Dolph Ziggler, Michelle McCool & Layla vs John Morrisson, Trish Stratus and Snooki - 6.5

Despite some good action this just seemed a almost a waste of time and purely a publicity stunt for a forgettable reality TV personality from a forgettable reality TV show. Snooki picks up the pin after a splash. That was almost painful to write - no wonder John Morrisson was annoyed.

The Miz vs John Cena for the WWE Title - 6.0

Is this the worst booked WWE Title match in Wrestlemania history? If Cena holds clean Wrestlemania victories against Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Big Show and Batista (that list could continue) then what chance does cheap money in the bank cash in champion The Miz stand against him? So we are presented with either Cena predictably winning cleanly or The Miz picking up a cheap victory - either outcome is not exactly thrilling, ground breaking or remotely Wrestlemania worthy. The match itself fortunately was good and had some very good action, this was the saving grace, however as soon as Miz's accomplice Alex Riley (wearing a waistcoat he borrowed from Aladdin) attacked Cena with a briefcase any possibility of The Miz upsetting Cena with a clean victory went out of the window. The match ended via double count out but was then restarted by the host (/king) of Wrestlemania 27 - The Rock. Once back in the ring The Rock hits the Rock Bottom on Cena to allow Miz a very cheap victory.

Its frustrating when wrestling is over analysed to magnify its inconsistencies but this match was just a little too much to swallow, firstly since when does a host have the power to re-start matches? Secondly The Rock hits Rock Bottom right in front of the ref, the commentators declare it is a no-dq match but hold on thats the first I've heard of that stipulation!? Thirdly, this is Cena and The Miz's main event - the closing image should be of one of those two men with their hand held high, not the host after having just destroyed the competitors. A good effort by Cena and Miz that was ultimately ruined by a wrong setting and poorly conceived conclusion.

Wrestlemania 27 Event Analysis:

What was pre-billed as one of the most memorable Wrestlemanias will inevitably go down as one of the more forgettable ones. The best match on the card was bettered the following year, no titles changes hands, no number one contenders set, no character swerves... It should be noted that the main event was the catalyst for one of the greatest build ups in Wrestlemania history - Cena Vs Rock. However, Wrestlemania is the most coveted event of all and under no circumstance should a main event be sacrificed to promote a different match, regardless of the match.
